Stonehaus Winery’s Closure of Choice

StonehausNeocorks.jpg

Why do we choose NeoCork?

As wonderful as cork is it is not perfect.

Cork Tainted wine or “Corked” wine is a problem that is on the rise

A substance called Trichloranisole or TCA causes Cork Taint.

Cork taint estimates are anywhere between 2% and 10% of all natural wine corks.

Cork taint will make wine smell musty or moldy. The wine will smell like wet newspaper or moldy cardboard. Cork taint can be subtle as well making the wine taste lifeless or muted.

We have noticed this problem at Stonehaus.

So what do you do?

Screw caps? They are reliable and inexpensive.

However, screw caps seem lack a bit of mystic and sophistication compared to natural corks.

Once again, what do you do?

Our solution to this dilemma is Neo cork.

A Napa based company in conjunction developed NeoCork with 5 leading wineries: Beringer Wine Estates, Kendall-Jackson, Allied Domecq Wines USA (Clos du Bois), Robert Mondavi Winery, and Sebastiani Vineyards.

Neocork claims to be the only wine cork made by winemakers for winemakers.

NeoCork uses a co-extrusion process (think play-dough fun factory) to create a consistent closure.

NeoCork has an inner foam core of polyethylene  (the same material our tanks are made of) and a more elastic outer surface for a smooth seal against the bottle.

NeoCork is not hard like many other synthetic closures, it is easy to remove, and it will not break off in the bottle.

We feel that it is a very elegant solution!
